What is Liraglutide?

Liraglutide is a once daily injection that works by mimicking the action of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) hormone, which reduces hunger and makes you feel fuller for longer. This leads to a reduced calorie intake and weight loss over time.

Originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes (at a lower 1.2–1.8mg dose), Liraglutide was licensed by the MHRA in March 2024 at a higher 3mg dose specifically for weight management. It is administered as a once-daily subcutaneous (under the skin) injection using a pre-filled pen.
